I always enjoy your comments.

I thought the exhibition had a lot going for it for a manga newbie and I'm going to head back (as I said in my review). I actually thought that there was a lot of content and it covered a lot of ground (maybe it needed more depth, but as a starting point I thought that it was excellent).

Interesting that we had such different experiences.Matt Badhamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12006039061655965233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4375103360700222239.post-41881506157672002582008-04-17T00:55:00.000-07:002008-04-17T00:55:00.000-07:00I have to say I was really disappointed with the e...I have to say I was really disappointed with the exhibition, and can't think of anything much that I came away from it having learnt. Like you Matt I approached it keen to discover something about this huge world of comics that so many other people are into, but I felt really let down. Half of it seemed to have been scanned from some manga overview book and blown up. The history of manga seemed crammed into one short paragraph and a few tiny reprints.
While I didn't expect to see original Hokusai prints and Tezuka sketches (I expect there are no 'originals' in the contemporary stuff either), I struggled to find any actual content of worth. I even bought myself a copy of Neo magazine (with Tokyopop sneaks enclosed) in an attempt to work out if I was missing something - and to be honest it all seemed facile, unimaginative and incredibly dull. Why does everyone want to draw exactly the same?
Urbis seems to be aiming this show at the nu-metal/goth kids outside, which is fine (captive audience, good for 'numbers'), but it's at the expense of other visitors who might want something a bit more substantial.Jim Medwayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02356399471133752156noreply@blogger.com
